Quick Step Configurations for NetWare Lite and Windows
This document is a quick 'bulleted' reference for taking the necessary
steps to configure Windows v3.1 for use with NetWare Lite v1.1. For
additional details refer to Fax Document 2601 (FYI.P.6054) for hardware
configuration or Fax Document 2550 (FYI.P.6122) for software
configuration. The following procedure assumes that you are installing a
local copy of Windows 3.1 and you do not have the NetWare Lite utility
for Windows.
1. If you are running SMARTDRV, ensure deferred writes are disabled.
This is done by modifying the line to be:
SMARTDRV C
(C is the drive Windows is normally located in. This parameter
disables deferred writes)
Warning: Do not run SMARTDRV (located in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT) and NLCACHE (located usually in the
STARTNET.BAT file) simultaneously!
2. If your LAN board uses upper RAM, ensure that the addresses are
excluded in the memory manager in the CONFIG.SYS. Examples of
boards that may qualify are the following:
■ SMC Elite 16
■ IntelEtherExpress
■ WD Plus
■ WD8003
■ SMC PC130
■ IBM TR 16/4
Refer to your hardware manual to determine what range needs to be
excluded. For example:
DR DOS CONFIG.SYS:
device=c:\drdos\emm386.sys /E=C000-C7FF
MS-DOS CONFIG.SYS:
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe X=C000-C7FF
or
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe X=C000-C7FF
Use a PORT address of 310 - 350 for your LAN board. To adjust the
I/O address, refer to your LAN hardware adapter manual and then
modify the NET.CFG in the C:\NWLITE directory.
DO NOT USE interrupts 2 or 9 (2=VGA)
Note: IRQ 3 or 4 may also cause problems. ( 3=com2, 4=com1).
To adjust the interrupt, refer to your LAN hardware adapter manual,
then modify the NET.CFG in the C:\NWLITE directory.
3. Add the following five SYSTEM.INI parameters in the [386enh]:
■ TimerCriticalSection=10000
■ UniqueDOSPSP=TRUE
■ PSPIncrement=5
■ ReflectDOSInt2a=TRUE
■ OverlappedIO=OFF
4. Modify the NETWORK= line in the SYSTEM.INI to include VIPX.386. The
current line may look like the following:
network = *dosnet, *vnetbios
After modification, it should look like the following line:
network = *dosnet, *vnetbios, VIPX.386
5. Copy the VIPX.386 driver from the C:\NWLITE directory to the Windows
SYSTEM directory.
Example:
copy c:\nwlite\vipx.386 c:\windows\system\vipx.386
6. CAPTURE and MAP resources as needed. (Before entering Windows)
7. Start Windows
8. Open the Control Panel.
9. Open the printer icon.
10. Select the type of printer being used.
11. Select the CONNECT button.
12. Set the printer port to LPT1.DOS or LPT2.DOS (depending upon which
port you capture before going into Windows).
13. Turn off FAST PRINTING direct to port.
14. Select OK.
Optional: Turn off Print Manager. This is not necessary but may be
useful as a troubleshooting tip.
Optional: Apply all current patches, available from the BBS.(See Fax
Document 2727 or FYI.P.6137)
